Onchocercosis, commonly known as river blindness, is a parasitic disease caused by the filarial worm Onchocerca volvulus. The transmission of this disease occurs through the bites of infected blackflies, primarily of the genus Simulium. This condition predominantly affects communities living near fast-flowing rivers and is prevalent in various parts of Africa, Central America, and Yemen.

The term "onchocercosis" derives from the scientific classification of the causative agent and the condition it manifests. The prefix "oncho-" relates to the genus of the worm, while "-cercosis" refers to the presence of cysts, specifically the larval stage of the parasite within the human host.
